Objectives: This study aims to determine the bifid median nerve (BMN) frequency in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to investigate the possible association between CTS and BMN in this patient population. Patients and methods: A total of 194 wrists of 131 patients in whom CTS was diagnosed clinically and electrophysiologically and 73 healthy volunteers without any symptom or sign of CTS were examined with ultrasonography. Results: Bifid median nerve was detected in 22 wrists (11.3%) in CTS group and 15 wrists (10.2%) in the control group. There was no statistically significantly difference in the incidence of BMN among patients with CTS and healthy volunteers (p=0.891). Conclusion: Our study results showed that the incidence of BMN was similar among CTS patients and healthy volunteers. Therefore, we conclude that BMN may not be a predisposing factor for CTS.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Association with Klippel-Trénaunay Syndrome: A Case Report
Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome is a rare congenital condition that rarely affects peripheral nerves. Median nerve involvement at carpal tunnel level has only been reported in a few occasions in the medial literature. A 61 years old Caucasian female patient with Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome presented with a 10 months history of paraesthesiae and numbness affecting the median nerve distribution area...
متن کاملCarpal Tunnel Syndrome Caused by Bifid Median Nerve in Association with Anomalous Course of the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis Muscle at the Wrist
Secondary carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can be caused by vascular anomalies usually involving persistent median artery, variations of the median nerve, and space-occupying lesions in the wrist and palm. High division of the median nerve proximal to the carpal tunnel (known as a bifid median nerve) is a median nerve anomaly with a reported incidence of 2.8% per wrist. The bifid median nerve is of...
متن کاملPrevalence of bifid median nerves and persistent median arteries and their association with carpal tunnel syndrome in a sample of Latino poultry processors and other manual workers.
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of bifid median nerves and persistent median arteries, their co-occurrence, and their relationship to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are only understood partially. METHODS We screened 1026 wrists of 513 Latino manual laborers in North Carolina for bifid median nerves and persistent median arteries using electrodiagnosis and ultrasound. RESULTS A total of 8.6% of wr...
متن کاملBifid median nerve in a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome--correlation of clinical, diagnostic and intraoperative findings: case report and review of the literature.
A young patient with symptoms of median nerve compression in carpal tunnel without known risk factors is presented. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed an anatomical variation of the median nerve in carpal tunnel, described in the literature as bifid median nerve. The knowledge of the existence ofbifid median nerve is important in planning surgical decompression of median n...
متن کاملAberrant Radial Artery Causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Anatomical vascular variations are rare causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. An aberrant medial artery is the most common vascular variation, while an aberrant radial artery causing carpal tunnel syndrome is even more rare, with an incidence ranging less than 3%. This article reports a patient with compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel by an aberrant superficial branch of the radi...
